Lash Extensions explained - the ultimate guide to understanding the different techniques, curls, styles and types

Lash extensions have become a staple in the beauty industry, offering a convenient way to enhance the look of natural lashes. However, with various techniques, curls, styles, and materials available, navigating the world of lash extensions can be overwhelming.

So let's try and break down everything you need to know about different types of lash extensions, empowering you to make informed decisions and achieve your desired lash look and to be able to understand what the hell your lash tech is talking about!

The most important thing to understand, the difference between Classic, Hybrid, and Volume Lash Extensions,

  • Classic Lash Extensions: Classic lashes involve the application of one lash extension to one natural lash, providing a natural yet enhanced appearance.

  • Hybrid Lash Extensions: Hybrid lashes combine classic and volume techniques, featuring a mix of single lash extensions and lightweight volume fans for added texture and dimension.

  • Volume Lash Extensions: Volume lashes consist of multiple lightweight lash extensions fanned out and applied to a single natural lash, creating a fuller and more dramatic look.

You might hear people talking about 2D or 8D lashes when it comes to Volumes. This number refers to the number of extensions within each fan.

To make things more confusing when getting Volume lashes you can either have handmade fans or your technician can use premade or promade fans. Handmade fans requires a higher level of skill and if your technician is not able to hand make their fans then they may just be starting out and have less experience with lashing. Russian Volume refers to the technique of hand making the fans.

Once you know how thick you'd like your lashes then next choice is the style. There are many different styles to choose from and each technician may call them something slightly different but the most commonly used terms are Cat Eye, Doll Eye, Open Eye, Natural and Wispy.

Next up, Curls. There are many different "curls" that can be used to achieve different end results and the desired style. A slightly less curled extension, like a B curl, will give a more natural look where a tighter curl, like a DD curl, will give a more dramatic and full on look. When it comes to choosing the right curl it will depend on the look you are after as well as the shape of your eye and how the extensions sit on your natural lashes. This decision is best left to the experts!

The best way you can convey what look you are after is to take a few photos of lash extensions you like to your initial appointment. That way your technician can advise what decisions will best get your desired outcome.

Lastly but not least, you can also get extensions made from different materials,

  • Synthetic: synthetic lashes are usually your budget option. They are made from a less flexible, shiner acrylic material and don't usually look as natural as other forms of extensions

  • Silk/ mink: silk and mink lashes are by far the most popular option and will be the go to for 99% of lash techs. To make things more confusing both of these options are actually made from a PBT fibre and are not made from silk or mink! The difference between the two are where the taped from the end starts. Silk lashes have a shorter taper making them a better option from a fuller look whereas mink lashes have a longer taper making them appear softer and you may need more of these to achieve the same look as you would with silk extensions

  • Mink fur: these lashes are from the animal the mink. They are loosing popularity due to higher prices, the lashes loosing curl and looking unruly and also animal cruelty issues. These lashes look the most like a natural lashes but also do not hold curl so require more maintenance and upkeep than the other types.

Understanding the different types of lash extensions, including techniques, curls, styles, and materials, is essential for achieving your desired lash look. Whether you prefer classic, hybrid, or volume lashes, there is a style and material to suit every preference and eye shape. Consult with a qualified lash technician to determine the best option for you and we hope that this breaks down some of the confusion when talking lashes!
